Parkview’s Medical Surgical (Med Surg) unit provides care to a variety of patients who are mostly inpatient, but are occasionally outpatient or observation status depending on the extent of their care needs.

Services provided to patients on the Med Surg Unit include but are not limited to the following:

  • Medical—care of a variety of low to moderate complex medical issues.
  • General pre/post-operative surgery—care of patients prior to and/or after a surgical procedure. Patients may have discussed extended stay options with their surgeon prior to coming to the hospital; those patients are cared for on the Med Surg Unit.
  • Oncology/hematology—care for patients who have medical or surgical oncologic or hematologic needs. These may range in complexity, including noncancerous-related blood disorders or cancer-related issues. Parkview staffs cancer navigators to assist patients, families and caregivers overcome barriers to cancer care. Additionally, the Med Surg Unit houses a cancer resource center, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, for patients and their loved ones to obtain information about cancer and local resources available.
  • Orthopedic—care for musculoskeletal needs, such as fracture repair or elective procedures for degenerative joint diseases. A Parkview orthopedic nurse navigator is available to patients before and after surgery, and coordinates care needs by working closely with patients’ physicians during their stay. In collaboration with the orthopedic nurse navigator, the Parkview orthopedic team host an orthopedic pre-operative total joint class that prepares you for your elective surgery prior to hospitalization.

Our experienced staff includes registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and patient care technicians who are versed in a wide variety of patient populations, and many are med surg, oncology and/or orthopedic certified.
