About diagnostic cardiac catheterization

A diagnostic heart cath is done to identify abnormalities that may indicate a problem with the function of the heart muscle, valves or the blood flow through the heart. Patients may have initially had an abnormal EKG, abnormal stress tests or experienced chest pain or angina.
During cardiac catheterization, a catheter is inserted into a vein in the leg and then threaded upward to the heart. In some instances, the catheter is inserted into a blood vessel in the arm. A contrast dye is then injected through the catheter to make the coronary arteries and other heart structures more visible on X-rays.

Other services available at our cath lab

  • Insertion of pacemakers and implantable cardiac defibrillators
  • Implementation of cardio synchronized therapy, helping individuals with heart failure enjoy a better quality of life and sometimes preventing the need for a heart transplant
  • Implantation of loop recorders that record heart rhythms for longer periods of time and can help diagnose intermittent abnormalities
  • Performing peripheral arteriography and stenting (arms, legs, kidneys)
