Urogynecology

Urogynecology is the specific focus on urology care for women, focusing on issues related to the urinary tract and reproductive system. Some common urogynecological conditions our providers treat include:

Pelvic Organ Prolapse and Mesh Problems

Female pelvic problems can relate to the uterus, bladder, vagina and rectum. Muscles and ligaments hold these internal systems together, but with age and childbirth, muscles can become stretched, causing organs to move and lower from their natural position. Various options—from medical mesh to in-home exercise and therapy—can help repair descended organs.

Urinary Tract Infections

Common urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms women experience include: urgent urination, stress incontinence, leakage and increased urination frequency.

Kidney and Bladder Stones

Made of thousands of tiny crystals, kidney and bladder stones can form in the bladder or kidneys. These stones can cause pain as they pass through the urinary tract. Treatment ranges from medication management to surgery.

Cancers of the Bladder and Kidneys

Bladder cancer occurs when cancer cells form in the lining that makes up the bladder’s inside wall. If left untreated, cancerous cells can spread to other body parts, including the kidneys. Treatment varies from surgery to radiation or chemotherapy to combat growing cancer cells.

Interstitial Cystitis and Pelvic Pain

This chronic bladder condition causes consistent pain and the urgency to urinate. Typically symptoms of interstitial cystitis will last for six weeks or longer. Typical treatments include therapy, surgery or a range of oral medications.

Urinary Urgency

The frequent urge to urinate can happen in either men or women, although this condition is more common in women. While age and childbirth can cause urinary urgency, this condition is sometimes caused by an underlying disease. Interstitial cystitis, urinary tract infections, vaginal infections and diabetes can cause urinary urgency. This condition can also be a side effect of many commonly prescribed medications.
